The Tonghui Tower in Zhuozhou was once known as the "Eight Scenic Spots of Zhuolu" during the Yuan Dynasty and the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. According to Shi Hengde's "Record of the Eight Scenic Spots of Zhuolu", there was a city within the city, with a gate named "Tonghui". On top of the city within the city stood a three-room tower called "Tonghui Tower", with a drum on the left and a bell on the right. The tower was four zhang high, commonly known as the Drum Tower. On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month each year, during the Lantern Festival, 72 wooden archways were placed from Tonghui Tower to the South Gate, with seven lantern pavilions at the intersections. Streets and alleys were adorned with lights and decorations, with dragon and lion dances, stilt walking, and firecrackers creating a lively atmosphere. The scene was truly spectacular, with the lights and decorations creating a vibrant "Tonghui Lantern Market". As a poem goes: "With the arrival of spring and the full moon in the sky, the city comes alive with music and lights. Countless lanterns illuminate the twin towers, casting a dazzling glow in front of the Drum Tower." In 2001, the Tonghui Lantern Market was renamed the Lantern Festival, and it has continued to this day.
Contemporary poet Wei Fang from Zhuozhou praised the Tonghui Lantern Market in his poem:
The Tonghui Lantern Market brings joy to thousands of families,
Young and old alike gather to admire the fireworks.
On the night of the Lantern Festival, the streets are packed with people,
North and south, long streets are adorned with colorful decorations.
Music and songs fill the air from various towers,
The whole city is bathed in the colors of spring.
Like the legendary Penglai Island in ancient times,
The beautiful scenery of Zhuozhou shines far and wide.
