The Tale of Longgang Ancient Temple
In ancient times, people used to say that a mountain is not famous for its height, but for the presence of immortals; and a river is not renowned for its depth, but for the existence of dragons. It is known that beyond the deep mountains and vast lakes, there are also sacred and divine beings residing. Such is the case with this place, where the veins emanate from the Yungui mountains, and the qi runs through the Zhuhai, coiling and undulating like a dragon. Amidst this lies a small hill, resembling the raised head of a dragon, hence the old saying that on dark and stormy nights, the hill is often shrouded in mist and clouds, ascending directly to the night sky, as if there were divine creatures exhaling in between, thus naming it "Longgang" (Dragon Hill).
Originally belonging to the Liu family of Shancun, the neighboring families, sensing the spiritual energy of the land, coveted it like the dragon's veins. The Liu family, being small in size, were wary of their stronger neighbors and feared potential disputes. Hence, members of the Liu, Guan, Zhang, and Zhao families came together to decide to construct a temple on the hill. They sculpted and worshipped Han Emperor Shaolie, as well as the gods Guan Zhuangmiao, Zhang Huanhou, Zhao Shunpinghou, and the warrior god Zhuge Wuhou, naming it "Longgang Ancient Temple" to deter any covetous schemes. This is how Longgang Ancient Temple got its name.
In the first year of Kangxi, the local Hanlin Academy compiler Liu Wenju wrote this account, to preserve the history and legend of the Longgang Ancient Temple.
